Description
Pre-WWI French Bayonet with Scabbard. Ricasso is unmarked. The crossguard has "B1???" on one side and "AD" on the reverse and the underside has an "S", a "U", and another illegible mark. The spine has "Waffenbabrik Steyr 1881". The groove has a "4", "M", and a couple other illegible marks. Everything is tight with typical wear. The wood grips have several bumps and nicks. Push button is functional. Muzzle hole opening is 11/16". The blade is straight, has not been sharpened, anddoes have some age spots throughout (heaviest on the lower third by the tip area)
. The scabbard is solid with three dents all in the same area and they do make the scabbard a bit tight (looks like it was hit with something), also has some light surface rust throughout. The backside of the hanger mount has a "15??". The ball finial has a "2" on one side and the reverse is a diamond with a French mark inside but is illegible. Length of the blade measures 20 1/2" (13/16" wide x 7/16" thick spine), length of the bayonet is 25 1/4", and overall in the scabbard it is 25 7/8".
Steyr produced M1874 bayonets for Greece. Greek M1874 bayonets are marked in German, “
Waffenfabrik Steyr
” (Weapons Factory Steyr).
