Description

This is an original First World War Imperial German Seitengewehr G98/05 bayonet known as the “Butcher Knife”.
This one is of particular interest as it has been professionally reduced in length so that it can double as a trench or fighting knife. Its original blade length of 14½ inches has been reduced to just over 9½ inches.
The ricasso is stamped “ALEX COPPEL, SOLINGEN” and the back edge is stamped crown over “W” and “18” for the Kaiser Wilhelm and the date 1918. Beneath this is an arsenal acceptance mark. The back of the hilt also has a couple of acceptance marks as does the crossguard.
This is a good example of an unusual conversion of a classic bayonet. The bayonet is in superb undamaged condition for its age - finished bright with a great patina. The grooved grips are complete and the press-stud works as it should. Please study the photos for a detailed condition report.
This is part of my 50 year collection of bayonets which I am starting to dispose of - it is guaranteed 100% genuine.
