    Description

Nice original WW1 German Ersatz bayonet and marked sheet medal scabbard. Bayonet fits scabbard perfectly.  Has a nice 12 3/8 inch fullered blade  (German specifications called for a 12 inch blade). Has a split muzzle ring. Has a 4-digit serial or rack number on handle which could indicate reissue by another country though unaltered. Also, there is what may be a proof mark on the spine or top edge of blade. It also has a mark on the ricasso.
The sheet metal scabbard is marked FAG in an oval. This stands for Fischers-aktien gesellschaft which was a ball-bearing factory in Schweinfurt Germany which produced many of these scabbards during WW1. This bayonet was designed to be used with the 1888 and 1898 commission rifle. One of the many varieties of German Ersatz bayonets produced. Being a stand in until full wartime production caught up. Photo shows this same type Ersatz bayonet mounted to a German Gewehr 88 or model 1888 commission rifle.
Nice complete example. It appears that the bayonet handle has been buffed thus a shiny appearance. Superb example to have in your collection.
