Lot of 3 Letters by a Teacher at Whittier College California Choir WWI 1915-18Description:
Three Letters by a Teacher at Whittier College, Including a Description of a Choir Performance Tour of the San Diego Naval Base and Hospital. Whittier, California: 1915-1918. Three letters totalling 14pp, two dated 1915, one dated 1918. These were written by Lelah Ferne, a teacher at Whittier College in Whittier, CA back home to Oskaloosa, Iowa. She describes attending prayer meetings, singing in a sacred choir, and her social life (including a 1915 Christmas party). A six page letter from 1918 includes a lengthy description of a tour Lelah took with the college's sacred choir in conjunction with the YMCA, singing at the Naval base and Naval hospital in San Diego during WWI and engaging with the doctors and troops: "we sang in 7 of the surgical wards. It was the first time any one had been allowed to visit them & the first singing they had had....then we were treated royally...the various Y.M.C.A. secty's told her that we had no idea what a great christian influence we girls had on the fellows...most of the girls from San Diego came dressed in such a way, or half-dressed that they appealed to the bad in men. He said we were so pure & innocent and so wholesome that we raised the men to our level." In excellent condition, a bit toned. [5136]
