    Description

For sale is a letter written by U.S. journalist Dorothy Dix in 1943 that mentions longtime newspaper editor John C. Shaffer. Dix was the pseudonym of Elizabeth Meriwether Gilmer. As the forerunner of today's popular advice columnists, she was America's highest-paid and most widely-read female journalist at the time of her death in 1951, at age 90. Her advice on marriage was syndicated in newspapers around the world. With an estimated audience of 60 million readers, she became a popular and recognized figure on her travels abroad. She wrote this letter to Mrs. Glenn Barr of Muncie, Indiana, thanking her for "liking my little tribute to Mr. Shaffer." Shaffer was editor and publisher of the Indianapolis Star from 1911 until his death in 1943. He also had been publisher of the Muncie Star. In her letter to Mrs. Barr, Dix notes that she and Shaffer had been friends for 30 years. The letter is written in ink on Dix's personal stationery. It measures 4 1/4 by 5 3/4 inches and comes with its original envelope, postmarked October 25, 1943, in New Orleans, where Dix made her home. See my listings for other vintage items.
