How rare is this, this model 1871 has been up grade it has all the bells and whistles, the scabbard collar, and drag have even been gold washed too stand out . This was carried by the 39th FUSILIER REGIMENT (LOWER RHINELAND) better know as the NIEDERRHEINISCHES Fusiliers- reg. ,formed in 1818.This regiment fought in the Austro-prussian war ,and in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71, this regiment fought at the Battle of GRAVELOTTE-ST.PRIVAT and the SIEGEOF METZ. In 1891 ARCHDUKE RAINER FERDINAND OF AUSTRIA , A GRANDSON OF EMPEROR LEOPARD 11 ,AUSTRIAN GENERAL AND PRIME MINISTER AND WAS MADE COLONEL IN CHIF. In ww1 the 39th was garrisoned at Dusseldorf as part of the 7th army corp. during the first world war they served on the Western front notably at the SIEGE OF LIEGE , AND THE BATTLE OF VERDUN AND THE SPRING OFFENSIVE OF 1919. The leather is in amazing shape, andthe etching with all the designs ,running down both sides of the blade,shows the quality and workmen ship in this sword /bayonet, this item is over two feet long, and othe then the tiny bit of plating is is amazing shape for being 139 years old. This has the makers mark on the blade with the knights head.
