You biggest problem will be to determine what chip the USB modem is using and thus then if there are linux drivers for them and then only you may have to do a bit of work to get the drivers installed if required.

I have one of them inside my Acer notebook, and it works – unfortunately however, after installing standard slmodem hsfl from ubuntu repository, speed is limited to just Some smartlink chipsets don’t need slamr and can use ALSA instead.
In my case it seems totally useless.
